- Moeve Chemicals has contributed its technical and industrial expertise to the further development of a new ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) designed to provide an independent framework for certifying the transparency, reproducibility and credibility in product carbon footprint assessments and accounting
- The certification has been piloted through an audit at Moeve Chemicals’ Palos de la Frontera chemical plant in Spain, bringing the new framework into a real industrial environment and applying the renewable energy approach
- The development builds on knowledge gained through Moeve Chemicals’ proprietary Low Carbon methodology, based on the use of biomethane for sustainable production, which has been independently verified by AENOR across the company’s entire global production network
- Beyond the successful ISCC CFC pilot in Palos de la Frontera, Moeve Chemicals is the first company to use the certification to support the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of its NextLab R100 produced from ISCC PLUS certified renewable feedstocks (ISCC PLUS raw material category bio, ISCC mass balance approach) and renewable electricity, manufactured in Puente Mayorga
Moeve Chemicals’ phenol plant in Huelva, Spain, has become the first facility to be audited under the requirements of a new ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) for the production of products based on the use of biomethane. The scope includes the main products manufactured at the Palos de la Frontera site: phenol, acetone, alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) and cumene.
This initiative marks a major step forward in the development of certification mechanisms for chemical products with a lower carbon footprint, while enabling chemical producers and their customers to substantiate their decarbonization efforts.
Specifically, the facility, located in southern Spain, has served as a pilot plant to test a new international certification scheme in which Moeve Chemicals’ Low Carbon methodology and expertise has contribute to develop its renewable energy and biomethane approach. The methodology is designed to establish a transparency, reproducibility and credibility in product carbon footprint assessments and accounting when a mitigation methodology is used in the manufacture of chemical products, such as biomethane.
The initiative, carried out by Moeve Chemicals, ISCC and Meo Carbon Solutions, reflects a shared ambition across industry: to move beyond individually developed company methodologies towards scalable approaches that can contribute to the decarbonization of chemical value chains.
“Decarbonizing the chemical industry requires innovation in the way we produce, but also robust and transparent mechanisms to demonstrate the progress that is being made,” said Alfredo Lopez, Global Head of Safety, Energy & Sustainability at Moeve Chemicals.
“We are particularly proud that the experience we have built through the development and implementation of our Low Carbon methodology has contributed to ISCC’s work on this new certification framework, and that our Palos facility has been selected to pilot its application in an industrial environment. This is an important step in moving from a company solution towards an approach with the potential to support the transformation of the wider industry.”
Turning industrial expertise into the development of a certification framework
Moeve Chemicals’ contribution to the new ISCC framework builds on the company’s experience in developing a proprietary system for the production of Low Carbon chemical solutions.
The methodology independently verified by AENOR, was developed to ensure transparency, traceability and consistency in the allocation and management of renewable energy attributes across Moeve Chemicals’ operations. It supports a Low Carbon portfolio designed to reduce product carbon footprints while maintaining the quality, performance and reliability of conventional alternatives.
In July 2026, Moeve Chemicals announced the completion of the verification of its entire global manufacturing network. Following the verification of its facilities in Brazil and Shanghai, all Moeve Chemicals production plants became enabled to manufacture and supply products under its verified Low Carbon approach.
The knowledge gained through the development, third-party verification and global implementation of this methodology has provided practical industrial experience that Moeve Chemicals has shared in support of ISCC’s work on the new certification.
The pilot audit at Moeve Chemicals’ Palos de la Frontera plant represents an important milestone in that process, allowing the proposed certification requirements to be tested in an operating chemical facility.
From Pilot Certification to Renewable-Based Products
The principles underpinning the ISCC CFC framework can also be applied to chemical products manufactured from renewable feedstocks, enabling transparent and independently verified Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) claims.
Building on its role in the development and pilot implementation of the certification at Palos de la Frontera, Moeve Chemicals has now become the first company to apply the ISCC CFC framework to an ISCC PLUS certified renewable-based chemical product (ISCC mass balance approach). The certification provides independent verification of the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of NextLab R100, produced at the company’s Puente Mayorga site in Spain.
Moeve is a global company comprising over 11,000 employees, committed to sustainable energy and mobility, with the ambition to drive Europe’s energy transition and accelerate decarbonisation both within the company and for its customers.
After leading the energy sector as Cepsa for more than 90 years, the company launched its new brand, Moeve, in of 2024. This new identity reflects the acceleration of its transformation to lead in the production of sustainable energy powered by green molecules, including green hydrogen and second-generation biofuels, as well as sustainable chemical products. It is also developing an extensive network of ultrafast electric chargers in Spain and Portugal to boost sustainable mobility.
Through its 2030 Positive Motion strategic plan, Moeve is working to transform mobility and energy to create a better world, ensuring today’s energy supply while focusing on sustainable energy solutions for the future.
