Cepsa also produces Alpha Methyl Styrene (AMS), used as a precursor for the production of plastics and cumene for the production of surface coatings surfactants, propylene oxide and as a petrol additive.
Cumene
Cumene, or isopropylene, is an aromatic hydrocarbon obtained by alkylation of benzene with propylene. Its main use is the production of cumene hydroperoxide, intermediate to synthesize phenol and acetone. It is also used in surfactants, propylene oxide, and as an additive in gasolines.
Alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) is a co-product of phenol production from cumene, obtained by alkylation of benzene with propylene. It is then separated from the rest of the products by means of fractionation.
